While I’m on the subject of Indian lettering, I should give a shout to this exquisite collection of book covers posted to Flickr by Quinn Dombrowski. The range of lettering and illustration styles shown in these covers will blow your mind, I hope, and show a little something about the richness of the lettering tradition in those scripts. And dig those rich lithography colors!
Most of the covers feature Bengali lettering, but there’s a handful of books in Arabic and some other Indic scripts, as well. Apparently “these books were acquired for the University of Chicago from the Library of Congress Field Offices in New Delhi and Islamabad”. The collection currently lives in the PK (Indo-Iranian languages and literatures) section of the University of Chicago’s Regenstein library, so if you’re in that area I’m officially jealous and urge you to go look at them in person.
