A few selections from What If? #34, a special issue from August 1982 that I consider a class of the genre…
What If Thor Had a Swedish Accent?
What If Willie Lumpkin Were Herald to Galactus?
What If Black Bolt Hosted a Television Show?
What If Bruce Banner’s Pants Didn’t Stretch When He Became the Hulk?
What If Wonder Man Were a Woman and Power Man Were a Girl?
So, you want my run of What If?, too? Although most of them were barely passable as “spoofs.” You imagine that the Marvel folk wrote them as real stories that just didn’t have enough Marvel “oomph.”
Most “What If?” stories were pretty lame, but I recall a few good ones here and there. I always likes the ideas, but the stories tended to be written pretty poorly. It looks like Marvel is starting to publish a new series of them, and I’ll be curious to see if they’re any better this time around.
I had so many of them but the only ones I really remember are the “What if Phoenix Hadn’t Died” one and the Assistant Editors Month one called “What if Starring Aunt May and Franklin Richards” or something like that. Aunt May ends up becoming a Herald of Galactus known as Golden Oldie.
Some crazy shit there.
