While I’m on the subject<\/strong> of Indian lettering<\/a>, I should give a shout to this exquisite collection<\/a> of book covers posted to Flickr<\/a> by Quinn Dombrowski<\/a>. The range of lettering and illustration styles shown in these covers will blow your mind, I hope, and show a little something about the richness of the lettering tradition in those scripts. And dig those rich lithography colors!<\/p>\n

Most of the covers feature Bengali lettering, but there’s a handful of books in Arabic and some other Indic scripts, as well. Apparently<\/a> “these books were acquired for the University of Chicago from the Library of Congress Field Offices in New Delhi and Islamabad”. The collection currently lives in the PK (Indo-Iranian languages and literatures) section of the University of Chicago’s Regenstein library<\/a>, so if you’re in that area I’m officially jealous and urge you to go look at them in person.<\/p>\n
