{"id":1774,"date":"2009-01-20T10:28:38","date_gmt":"2009-01-20T10:28:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ultrasparky.org\/blog\/2009\/01\/20\/magical_mystery\/"},"modified":"2024-11-29T14:40:24","modified_gmt":"2024-11-29T19:40:24","slug":"magical_mystery","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ultrasparky.org\/blog\/2009\/01\/20\/magical_mystery\/","title":{"rendered":"Magical mystery tub"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>I\u2019m reading my way through a stack<\/strong> of old issues of <i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.metropolismag.com\">Metropolis<\/a><\/i> (my sister recently handed me all the back issues from my subscription that she received after I left the country in September \u201906), and <a title=\"Troubled waters\" href=\"http:\/\/www.metropolismag.com\/story\/20070314\/troubled-waters\">this Susan Szenasy editorial<\/a> from March 2007 really resonated with me.<\/p>\n<p>I love having a good soak in a a good tub, a pleasure that\u2019s become an acute craving now that I can\u2019t even guarantee a quick shower with hot water in the shithole where I currently live. <a title=\"See everyone's pics on Flickr\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/search\/?q=oaklands%20reading&amp;w=all\">Oaklands<\/a> had a pretty spectacular tub, but even that was easily surpassed by the at my friend\u2019s flat where I house-sit from time to time. That one is pure heaven.<\/p>\n<p>I agree with Szenasy\u2019s basic requirements for a good tub: deep, made of metal rather than plastic, with a good angle for reclining. I\u2019d add one more feature that can make or break a good bath for me: natural light. There\u2019s something about a generous flood of natural light \u2014 even weak, midwinter British light \u2014 that completes the experience for me.<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes a nice, hot bath can be so perfectly relaxing that I struggle with it. I\u2019m so used to being tense and stressed out that I can feel my whole body rebel against the relaxing effects of a long, hot soak. In a twisted way, I have to concentrate on letting myself unwind.
